Six Dimensions of Wellness: Spiritual Wellness

All of us search for meaning and purpose. Spirituality takes many forms, whether it means participating in an organized religious group, finding solace in nature or exploring spiritual concepts in discussions with others. Spiritual wellness is embracing core values that guide you, examining your beliefs and actively practicing those values and beliefs. Spiritual wellness brings peace and harmony to our lives.

Overall wellness consists of more than just being physically well. At the Ingleside communities, we promote Six Dimensions of Wellness that encompass Spiritual, Social, Emotional, Vocational and Intellectual as well as Physical Wellness. In this series of posts, we’re delving into each of those dimensions and how they are supported and practiced at each Ingleside retirement community.

“Spiritual wellness is probably different for many people, but at heart it is a way of finding meaning and purpose in our lives,” says Rev. Dawn Haeger, chaplain at Westminster at Lake Ridge. “It helps each person become in touch with their own purpose, values, and how they make choices in life—what brings them joy. When someone is having a difficult time, it’s the well that offers resilience.”

Often when life brings challenges, “we start asking the big questions: Who am I? Why do bad things happen to good people? Why am I here?” Haeger says. “We all have an internal narrative that helps us answer those questions. Sometimes those answers don’t work for us anymore, and we need to explore others. We may be asking questions of our own tradition or exploring other traditions. Spiritual wellness helps us address those questions.”

Westminster at Lake Ridge offers ecumenical Christian worship services each week, as well as interfaith gatherings, meditation and practices such as qi gong to explore spirituality. Coming up in June is an opportunity for residents to learn more about Islam.

To deepen their understanding of Ramadan, “last year we invited speakers from the Muslim Association to speak,” Haeger says. “This year, we’ve been invited to come and break the fast with them.”

Haeger believes “it’s important to understand that to explore spirituality does not mean to deny that which gives you life. If you are a traditional Episcopalian, spiritual wellness is not going to ask you to deny that. It’s going to invite you to go deeper to find ways to grow.”

Spiritual wellness “helps you confirm what you do believe and why you believe it,” Haeger says. “Often you are open to hearing about other traditions, but not necessarily becoming them.”

Spiritual wellness is “incredibly important,” Haeger says. “Without it, one’s ability to be at peace and healthy as a full integrated person, I believe, is just not possible.”
