April showers bring herbs and flowers to retirement community’s garden!

blog-garden-wlrjpgThat 50-foot-by-50-foot plot of land that sits alongside the butterfly garden beehive and pond on the Westminster at Lake Ridge campus hasn’t looked like much over the past few months. But give it a few more weeks, and the Westminster Gardens will be bursting with green sprouts.

The garden will be tilled any day now, says Nancy, the coordinator for the garden and a member of the retirement community’s Landscape Committee. Once that’s done, volunteers will have a “rake and stake” party to lay out the 22 individual plots. Each one has been adopted by a gardener.

As the summer progresses, herbs, tomatoes and other vegetables, and flowers will turn the garden into a colorful, edible patchwork. Squash will run merrily through the beds. Sunflowers will tower above the fence, which keeps out hungry deer.

Strictly organic methods are used in the garden, Nancy says. The gardeners maintain a compost bin and fortify the soil with natural materials. As a result, the soil is excellent and produces great-tasting tomatoes.

“We all grow more than we can ever eat,” Nancy says. “We take them to the central reception area and give them to the community. They’re usually gone by noon.”

Flowers from the garden brighten the lobby.

“Last year one of our gardeners took two plots and broadcast flower seeds,” says Nancy. “It was a spectacular jungle.”

The garden has gotten a new lease on life in the past several years as avid gardeners like Nancy pitched in.

“We help each other,” she says. “It becomes quite a fun social time.”

Nancy and the gardeners who maintain the butterfly and vegetable gardens are great examples of the active, engaged folks who make Westminster at Lake Ridge such a special retirement community, where residents enjoy a high quality of life in a pastoral setting that’s within a short commute of all the excitement the D.C. metro area has to offer. It’s a place where residents can keep on doing the things they’ve always loved—like gardening, or find new passions, in a setting that provides safety, security and a comfortable retirement life. And it’s a place where the residents take a hands-on approach to making Westminster at Lake Ridge their home.

The gardeners are proud of the gardens they create each year and are happy to show them off to residents and visitors. If you’d like to visit the community, please give us a call at 703-436-8122, and while you’re here, don’t forget to ask to see the garden!
