Make this the New Year you keep your resolutions

blog-resolution15jpgWhy is it so hard to keep New Year’s resolutions? You sincerely believe when you make them that, this year, you’re going to go to the gym, walk more or learn to paint. You attack the new project with enthusiasm that seems effortless the first couple of weeks of January. Then it starts to be a chore, and pretty soon, your motivation is sliding and you’re skipping your workouts.

According to researchers at the University of Scranton, losing weight is the Number 1 resolution people made last year, followed by getting better organized and saving more money. About 45 percent of Americans usually make resolutions, but only 8 percent actually achieve them.

People who make specific resolutions are 10 times more likely to succeed in reaching the goals they set for themselves. Instead of saying, “I’m going to get fit next year,” say “I’m going to go to the gym three times a week, at 3 o’clock Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays” or “I’m going to take an 8-week class in watercolors”—

Psychologists also say you have to really want to succeed, so pick a resolution you can commit to and pursue passionately. It has to be an activity you enjoy, not just something you think you should do.

It’s also a good idea to have a plan. Get a calendar and make appointments to go for a walk. Treat each appointment as if were a work obligation you can’t miss. If you can find a buddy who’s working on the same resolution, that’s even better. Get into the mindset that your friend is depending on you to show up for your walk every day. You’ll be more motivated because you won’t want to disappoint her.

If you are having trouble on a particular day, try writing down why it’s important to you to achieve your goal. Remember why you chose that goal in the first place and what benefits you are getting as you pursue it. It may help to think of it as a process, during which you will inevitably be more enthusiastic some days than others. List specific reasons why you should not postpone your efforts today. You might get frustrated because you haven’t lost a pound in a week, but if you compare where you started with where you are now, you’ll realize you’ve made progress.

Resolutions like losing weight are not easy to achieve, but you can do it if you overcome the resistance you’re bound to feel sometimes. It takes three to four weeks to establish new habits, but once you do, you’ll find it easier to continue. The benefits—of more energy—will spur you on.

From all of us at the Ingleside communities, we wish you a happy and healthy New Year.
