Bringing the beauty of the season indoors: fall decorating tips

As summer begins winding down amid all the changes and challenges of COVID-19, one thing is still certain. The seasons will continue to arrive on schedule.

And now fall, one of the most beautiful times of the year, is just around the corner. If you need a boost in spirits or you’re just ready for a change, refreshing your home décor can provide just the right lift.

You’ll no doubt see the signs of the season in your independent living community as well. But whether you go big and bold or quiet and understated, nothing says welcome home as convincingly as the textures and colors of fall.

Here are a few tips:

1. Collect a variety of pumpkins and gourds

Plan a shopping trip for pumpkins and gourds - to your local farmer’s market if you’re searching for fresh or a craft shop for faux. Choose a variety of colors and sizes and then place in corners, empty spaces on shelves, or fill a basket to sit on the kitchen counter.

2. Set your fall table

This is the perfect time to switch out your placemats and napkins for your favorite seasonal colors - in plaid. Match the pattern with a coordinated table runner and show off your settings with the warm hues of reds, oranges and yellows. Gold and copper metallic accents can perfect the look.

3. Add a new welcome mat or kitchen runner

Find your favorite fall colors and designs in an entry mat, for indoors or out, or a new runner for your kitchen. Remember that when it comes to updating your décor, major changes aren’t required. Sometimes just adding a pop of color in the right place can make all the difference.

4. Change up your bedding

Create a cozy bed for those cooler nights ahead. The time is coming to put away the light cotton sheets and pastel colors for your coordinated fall bedding. Mix and match plaid and solid patterns for your blankets, sheets and pillow shams. And don’t forget to do the same for your guest bedroom.

5. Hang a wreath that welcomes you home

Nothing says you’re home quite like the perfect seasonal wreath. You can purchase it or if you’re feeling creative, make your own fall masterpiece. Add moss or other greenery, faux flowers, apples, cobs of corn and husks. Attach a small wooden sign that celebrates the season. If the front door is not the perfect place, try hanging on your entry mirror or over a kitchen cabinet door.

6. Create an art project

Bring back your childhood memories of collecting leaves with an art project of your choice. There is no shortage of ideas if you look online. One idea is to take a board and trace a fall shape that you like. Collect the most beautiful leaves you can find and paste into the drawing outline, creating as many layers as you desire.

7. Use white pumpkins for a backdrop

Go beyond the traditional orange of the season. White pumpkins are an empty canvas just waiting for your touch. Borrow a few leaves from your fall collection and paste the pressed leaves on the pumpkins. You can also paint whatever designs you like that conveys a message of welcome or celebrating the season.

8. Change out the chair cushions

One of the more dramatic re-dos you can try is to order or make your own fall cushions for your dining or kitchen chairs. Set the mood by choosing the right texture and colors, creating an invitation to share a meal together in this season of bounty.

9. Introduce cozy throws and pillows

Swap out your living room sofa or chair pillows with textures such as velvet, wool, chenille or cashmere in your favorite fall shades, of course. Not only will the colors tie your room together but a warm throw draped over a chair by the fireplace is a great spot to spend the perfect evening with a good book.

10. Enjoy the vibrant colors of fresh fall flowers

One of the simplest ways to bring the new season indoors is to add vases of flowers around your home. Consider chrysanthemums, marigolds, pansies and asters. One tip to keep them fresh longer is to remove any leaves that will be below the waterline. Also, remember to refresh the water every few days.

Decorating inside your home to reflect the beautiful outdoors

This is the perfect time to makeover your home and get ready for the cooler weather and changing colors of fall. But don’t forget to go outside and enjoy it in person. Taking a walk among those leaves on a beautiful afternoon is a simple yet eloquent way to embrace the coming season.

Your community will also be letting go of summer and looking forward to the new. As their own decorations reflect this change, look also for a shift in activities and the revision of menu selections to include fall favorites.
