Older Americans Month celebrates engaged living
Happy Older Americans Month! While we acknowledge the value of older Americans every day, the month of May is a special time to celebrate the fact that older Americans contribute in many ways that make a difference in their communities.
This year’s theme, Engage at Every Age, recognizes that you are never too old (or too young) to participate in activities that enhance our physical, mental and emotional well-being and connect to our communities.
“Research suggests that seniors who are socially engaged also are healthier, mentally and physically,” said Lance Robertson, head of the U.S. Administration for Community Living and Assistant Secretary for Aging with the U.S. Department of Human Services. “People engage to help others, by volunteering at their church, mentoring younger people or helping to raise grandchildren, for example. They engage to stay healthy – maybe they learn to dance or to better manage chronic diseases.
“I encourage Americans young and old – and, best of all, young with old! – to take a moment this month to share your stories. By sharing the stories of aging and older Americans, we celebrate our triumphs, share our wisdom, advocate for each other, and build stronger communities for all of us.”
Robertson is urging everyone to share their stories through the Older Americans Month Selfie Challenge by posting a photo on social media such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #OAM18. You can post a selfie or group photo illustrating your participation in activities that improve your well-being or your contribution to your community. Other ideas for celebrating Older Americans Month can be found at the Older Americans Month website.
