Research-based tips for staying well all year long

Forming good health habits in winter gives you a head start in staying healthy and well all year long. Incorporating a few good habits into your daily routine can help boost your immune system and help you fend off virus- and bacteria-borne illnesses and fight chronic diseases.

Of course, you’ll want to schedule regular visits with your doctor to maintain good health, but these good habits can lead to good checkups when you have your annual visit with your primary care physician.

According to experts from the Centers for Disease Control, one of the most important ways to stay well all year round is to get into the habit of washing your hands frequently. Research backs up the importance of hand washing to prevent viruses and bacteria from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community.

You should wash your hands whenever you are preparing or eating food; before and after caring for someone who is sick; after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing; after touching trash or garbage; after handling money; and after you’ve touched places that are frequently touched by others, such as numeric pads at checkout stations and grocery cart handles.

Thorough hand washing takes about 20 seconds. In situations where you can’t get to a restroom to wash your hands, such as in supermarkets, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Other great health habits include:

  • Load up your plate with fruits and vegetables. Colorful foods contain the micronutrients you need to fight off infections and maintain a healthy immune system. Be sure to wash all produce thoroughly.
  • Stay hydrated. You can become dehydrated even on chilly days. According to the CDC, the average daily water intake for US adults is 4 cups or less—about half the recommended amount. Besides keeping your juices flowing, drinking more water may help with weight control, especially when you substitute water for high-calorie beverages and sodas.
  • Keep active. Aim for a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you get sick, the CDC recommends staying home for at least 48 hours after symptoms subside, covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing; and avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • If you think you have the flu, be sure and consult your doctor as soon as possible, since anti-flu medications are most effective when you start taking them within two days of getting sick.

Staying healthy also involves practicing healthy habits every day, all year round, and paying attentions to multiple dimensions of wellness that include body, mind and soul. At Westminster at Lake Ridge, residents can participate in fitness activities from a variety of classes in the Fitness Center to water aerobics in the pool; get together with others for stimulating lectures and discussions; join neighbors for hikes around the beautiful, wooded campus; and enjoy healthy, chef-prepared cuisine prepared with fresh, local ingredients in the dining room.
