Retirement community residents’ generosity shines during the holidays

The generosity of residents at Westminster at Lake Ridge shines all year long, but it’s especially bright during the holiday season.

This year, residents are contributing to the community in several ways.

The retirement community is a drop-off site for Toys for Tots, and the collection box is filling with toys purchased by residents, staff and family members. The Toys for Tots Foundation collects new, unwrapped toys each year and distributes them to less fortunate children in the community. The program was founded in the 1980s by the U.S. Marine Corps and has been a nationwide mission of the Marine Corps Reserve since 1995.

Special traditions highlight the holiday season at retirement community

Residents of Westminster at Lake Ridge are carrying on a very special holiday tradition this year.

Each year, at the beginning of December, they gather to raise and decorate a Christmas tree in the main lobby. What’s unusual is that residents contribute the decorations. All of the newcomers to the community are encouraged to bring ornaments for the tree, adding to those that have been collected during previous seasons. So the tree is a true representation of the spirit and vitality of Westminster at Lake Ridge.

Westminster at Lake Ridge residents learn Italian from one of their own

The members of Lucio’s class know that means, “Good morning. I would like a cappuccino, please.” The conversational Italian class meets once a week on Fridays at Westminster at Lake Ridge, and the students are also learning to appreciate Italian culture. Like many activities at the retirement community, the project was initiated by residents and is being taught by a resident.

“When the residents discovered we’re Italians, they wanted to learn more,” Lucio says. A number of residents had visited Italy, either as travelers or as part of overseas service with the military or government.

6 Simple Steps to Prevent Falls

Did you know that falls are the No. 1 cause of injuries, hospital visits and deaths among people 65 and older? They account for almost 9 million emergency room visits each year, and older adults are at high risk. According to the National Council on Aging, 1 in 3 Americans 65 and older suffers a fall every year. Even if not fatal, a fall can result in disability or loss of independence. That’s unfortunate because falling is not an unavoidable part of aging. With a little attention to prevention, adjusting your lifestyle and awareness of fall hazards, most falls don’t have to happen.

The National Council on Aging recommends taking six simple steps to keep from becoming a fall victim. If you do, you could have a safer, healthier, more active and independent future.

Pickleball project earns retirement community residents a spot on TV

Bill and his team of pickleball enthusiasts are local celebrities, after a feature on Westminster at Lake Ridge’s new pickleball court aired on WJLA News 7 in July. They may have made a convert to the game in Eileen Whelan, the reporter who interviewed Bill.

Pickleball, a racquet sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, is a pastime Bill discovered when he was visiting a cousin in Phoenix seven years ago.

“I’d never seen it before, but it was pretty well developed there,” Bill says. “It’s very easy to learn and play.”

Retirement community residents display art from the heart

Mary Ellen and some of her artist friends at Westminster at Lake Ridge thought the hallway leading to the Health Services Center needed some sprucing up.

“The same art had been hanging on the walls for 20 years,” she says. It was dark and dull.

But through the efforts of the Art Committee, the hallway now shines with rotating displays of residents’ artwork. The current exhibit, featuring fabric art, is on display through September, and it’s very popular. In fact, residents go out of their way to view it.

8 ways to get happier right now

Happiness is a choice. You can’t always control what happens to you, but you can choose how you react to it. People who are optimistic and see the good in the world dwell in a happy place more than those who approach life with a negative attitude.

Here’s just one example. You’re driving on the freeway, and traffic is at a near standstill. What do you think as you stop and go or move along at 10 mph? Some people choose to fume and get worked up about it. Others might see this as an opportunity to listen to a book on CD. If you’re in this situation and you’re going to be late for an appointment, you could stress about it, or you could call the person you’re supposed to meet to explain that you’re stuck in traffic and then enjoy singing along with a favorite album.

You know you have to exercise to keep fit and healthy. But does that mean you have to do strenuous workouts? A new study from Oregon State University indicates that walking, dancing and household chores is nearly as effective as more vigorous exercise—if you do it long enough.

“You get a nice array of health benefits by doing five hours of light physical activity per week,” said Dr. Brad Cardinal, a professor in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences and co-author of the study.

Pedal power: Hop on a bike for fun and fitness

Remember how great it felt to ride a bike when you were a kid? Likely you had one with no gears, a bell to ring when you wanted to signal someone to get out of the way, and a basket to carry your gear.

If you haven’t jumped on a bike since your grammar school days, maybe it’s time to try it again. There are good reasons to do that: Riding a bike can burn up to 500 calories an hour. It’s easy on your joints and helps to develop the muscles that stabilize your hips.
According to People for Bikes, a website that aims to connect bike riders and make riding better for everyone, bike use is growing among all age groups, but it is skyrocketing among active older adults.
