Make this the New Year you keep your resolutions
Why is it so hard to keep New Year’s resolutions? You sincerely believe when you make them that, this year, you’re going to go to the gym, walk more or learn to paint. You attack the new project with enthusiasm that seems effortless the first couple of weeks of January. Then it starts to be a chore, and pretty soon, your motivation is sliding and you’re skipping your workouts.

Westminster at Lake Ridge Woodshop Volunteers Build Community
It’s noisy in the busy woodshop at Westminster at Lake Ridge, the electric sander is buzzing and the shrill sound of the table saw chimes in. These are the sounds made by a few talented wood workers who give of their time and talent to repair family treasures and preserve important memories for their neighbors.
For most people woodshop evokes faded memories of a high school class. But Ed Pearthree and several other residents of the Westminster at Lake Ridge retirement community are finding their woodshop glory days are still ahead. They donate time and woodworking skills to repair beloved but beat up furnishings for their community.

Lifelong Harmonica Enthusiast Wants to Pass on Love of Music
Jack Hopkins is not attending the Virginia HarmonicaFest (vaharmonicafest.com), the annual event for harmonica enthusiasts. The 94 –year-old resident of Westminster at Lake Ridge retirement community hasn’t lost his lifelong interest in the instrument though. He attends weekly meetings of the Capitol Harmonica Club in Fairfax County. He and one or two other harmonica players eagerly show up each Thursday night to jam and discuss their love of the mouth harp.

In Woodbridge, retirees visit kindergarten classrooms for reading and conversation
Schoolchildren doing service projects sometimes visit retirement communities such as Westminster at Lake Ridge, the one where Stockdale and her fellow tutors live. But the Westminster residents have turned that around: Instead of waiting for children to come to them, they go to the kids.

Continuing A Tradition of Giving Back
One of the appealing attributes that attracted Rev. Dawn Haeger to Westminster at Lake Ridge was its tradition of community service. Even before Rev. Haeger started as Chaplain in September, residents had worked thousands of service hours as a way of giving back to the community beyond their campus.
