Language. It is one of the most powerful tools we, as humans, have at our disposal for survival. It is the thing that helps us detail to others our needs and desires, allows us to relay information, pass down culture to our offspring, make a powerful persuasive argument, interact with people from other parts of the world, and the list goes on and on. Because language is so very important, we suffer when we lose the ability to use it, or use it effectively. Not being able to communicate can cut us off from others.

Libby Bush Named Executive Director at Westminster at Lake Ridge
As Westminster at Lake Ridge celebrates its 20th anniversary, the continuing care retirement community welcomes Libby Bush as Executive Director. She began her new role on September. 30th.
With more than 20 years of experience in the senior-living industry, Bush comes from Westminster Canterbury in Richmond. As a Vice President for 12 years, she was a key member of its executive team and oversaw four divisions including independent living, assisted living, memory care and nursing. She joined Westminster Canterbury in 1992 as a Personal Care Unit Manager.

The 20th Anniversary of the founding of Westminster at Lake Ridge, a non-profit continuing care community was held on Saturday, October 5th. Nearly 400 people came out for the celebration.

Lake Ridge Retirement Community Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Lake Ridge, VA--September 18, 2013--Westminster at Lake Ridge (WLR) reaches an important milestone when it celebrates its 20th anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 5, 1:00pm-3:00pm.
Over 500 people are expected to circle around the community flagpole for the outdoor ceremony. During the event, a new Executive Director, Libby Bush, and new chaplain, Dawn Hager, will be introduced.
Currently, the lobby is being renovated and other recent changes such as new leadership, community- wide wireless, Gold’s Gym personal trainers in the fitness center, and resident led multi-media and landscaping projects are keeping the community moving forward.

103-Year-Old Leads Team at Northern Virginia Senior Olympics
At 103, Doris Woodring leads 13 other residents and staff from Westminster at Lake Ridge at the 2013 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics (NVSO) Sept. 7-19 in Northern Virginia. Ms. Woodring competes in three events—Scrabble, Dominoes and Wii Bowling.
“I never thought I’d be an Olympian being over 100 years old,” Woodring says. “I’m probably best in Scrabble, but I’ve also been practicing my Wii bowling.”

Continuing Care Community Buzzing About Butterfly Garden
Lake Ridge, VA—Residents are buzzing at Westminster at Lake Ridge, a continuing care retirement community in Lake Ridge, VA, about the latest addition to its newly restored butterfly garden. A wooden beehive with an active colony of honey bees has recently been placed next to the Westminster Butterfly Garden in a retirement community already renown for its natural beauty.
“The beehive is the crowning touch to an area of the community that already houses the butterfly garden, the vegetable garden and a large pond,” says resident Boyd Post, the head of the Landscape Committee. “I was fishing the other day when a bald eagle swooped in and snatched a fish out of the pond!”

Prince William Co. Woman Celebrates 103rd Birthday
The day after she celebrated her 103rd birthday, Doris Woodring was gifted a cake, corsage and balloons by the staff of Giant Foods in Woodbridge, Va.
"We absolutely wanted to do something for her so we threw a party for her," store manager Larry Merritt said.

Westminster at Lake Ridge to Sponsor 2013 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics
The 31st annual Northern Virginia Senior Olympics (NVSO) will take place, Sept. 7-19 with over 50 events at 17 venues throughout Northern Virginia. New events this year are handball and rowing. Also new this year is the elimination of onsite registration. All participants must register ahead of time either online at www.nvso.com or by regular mail. Online registration opens July 1. Previous competitors will receive a registration form in the mail in late June. Forms will also be at senior centers, community centers, senior residences or by calling 703-228-4721.

Help in the Swimming Pool is the Life’s Work of One Local Senior
When Carol Cornutt was looking for a retirement community, her 'must have' feature was a swimming pool. Carol is a former physical education teacher from Eureka, California. She spent her entire career in the public school system and primarily taught swimming to high school students.
When she first retired, she moved from the Redwood Country to the California mountains. There, her home had a private swimming pool. Over the 16 years she lived in Mount Shasta, she estimates she gave swimming lessons in her backyard pool to between 200- 250 children.

Peer-to Peer Computer Training at Westminster at Lake Ridge
When Dorothy Horne arrived at Westminster at Lake Ridge three years ago, she had never used a computer. So last year when her church started sending its newsletter solely via e-mail, the 85-year-old told herself she had “better join the rest of the world.”
Fortunately, the “rest of the world” included Virginia Macpherson, a 15-year resident at the community who helped found CLIC—the Computer Learning and Information Center at Westminster at Lake Ridge. Macpherson helps mentor residents like Horne who are new to computers and the Internet.

102-Year-Old Hopes for Q-Letter Day at Northern Virginia Senior Olympics
