“We lived in a charming old farmhouse and were ready to give up housework, but not the house. We have found we are enjoying our retirement life and are so involved with so many things. You can be as busy as you want or do as little as you want.” Pat Coleman, Resident, formerly of Connecticut

Reverend Sandra ThomasRev. Dr. Sandra Thomas, Chaplain

Where are you from?

I grew up in Michigan and came to the Washington D.C. area to attend seminary and stayed. I have worked in Westminster, MD; Ellicott City, MD; and Annapolis. Most recently I was in the Philadelphia area for 3 years – and am glad to be back in the Washington metropolitan area.

What do you like best about your job?

I love visiting people and listening to the stories of their lives. Worship is central to my life and it’s an honor to have the opportunity to lead worship each week at Westminster. My specialty in ministry has always been pastoral care. It is a sacred privilege to support people through difficult times in life and watch them grow as God works in them. I have a mixed religious background which is of great value here – raised as a Baptist, ordained as a United Methodist minister and now a Presbyterian. There is much that people of different faiths can share with each other.

Family:

I have 3 sons who are the joy of my life. The youngest (Nathaniel) is a recent graduate of St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia working for State Farm Insurance. My middle son (Jeremy) works as a media specialist at the Willard Hotel in Washington D.C., soon to be married to his fiancé (Jen). My oldest son (Aaron) lives in central Pennsylvania and is studying law in his spare time.  I still have my mother, who lives in an assisted living community in Michigan. I’m the oldest of six children—3 still live in Michigan where we all grew up.

Hobbies:

I love to garden, especially perennial flowers and small fruits. I do some quilting and other needlework. I’ve done some home construction and renovation, but now mostly just help friends with their projects. A good book and a cup of tea are my favorite ways to spend a cold winter Saturday. And nothing takes priority over the opportunity to visit my sons!
